Effect of Foundation Geometry and Structural Properties of Buildings on Railway-Induced Vibration: An Experimental Modeling

This paper considers the impact of foundation geometry on vibrations transferred to a building in vicinity railway line from aspect choosing an appropriate type. For this purpose, 1-g scale physical model is developed that includes main parts containing dry sandy soil, rigid soil container, and five-story structure with three types foundations, i.e., single, strip mat. Next, effects floor slab frequency associated local bending mode, dominant vertical translation, vibration level are investigated. The experimental results obtained impulse loading exciting range 0–156 Hz scaled train axle load show transmitted floors mat smallest. Additionally, foundations reduced root mean square ratio velocity first by, respectively, almost 8% 53% comparison single foundation, confirming superior performance foundation. When natural mode approaches ground’s motion, resonance amplification becomes inevitable phenomenon.
